About

Intra Arts have run community arts venue and maker space ‘INTRA’ since 2014, and here the public has access to a wide range of specialist artist-owned equipment. We have a printmaking studio, kilns for glass, craft equipment and many other tools, as well as welcoming workspaces where we run creative classes. We have deep roots in the community, co-creating festivals, hosting exhibitions and helping people find creative pathways to better wellbeing.  We offer a multi-disciplinary programme of cultural events, training and activities to build engagement with the arts with people in Medway and Kent.

Our not for profit company Intra Arts Ltd. was formed in 2014 when we took on the former Spemco building in Rochester High Street. This Art Deco fronted, Victorian building is much loved in the historic area of ‘Chatham Intra’. Our aim is to provide an arts programme, creative opportunities and education in a space that feels welcoming to everyone.

We have built a friendly community of people interested in creativity of all kinds. People come to us to learn specialist skills, make things in company, to get a break from the stresses of their lives, have fun, work on projects collectively and individually, meet other local people, and all sorts of other reasons. We don’t require membership, and we keep prices affordable.

There is a lovely workshop space where we run a programme of creative activities. The space can also be hired by groups or individuals to host meetings, parties or classes.

The studio spaces at INTRA are brought to life by artists who share their expertise and equipment with the community. We have Medway Fine Printmakers CIC running a fantastic print studio with an excellent range of presses and courses spanning intaglio, stencil, and relief printing. Glassmania’s Karen Verma hosts glass classes every Tuesday, Fancy Tat host bottle-cutting and upcycling workshops regularly, and Intra Arts run all sorts of creative projects from the space, from lantern making for Medway Light Nights, to a textile and songwriting project The Cut Of Her Cloth celebrating female Medway leaders as a Platinum Jubilee legacy.

INTRA doesn’t currently receive ongoing funding from any public body. We do run projects funded by various arts, heritage and wellbeing organisations, and offer free and discounted activities as part of those schemes.
